My favorite way to eat banana bread is to cut a piece while it's still warm and slather it in butter. Adding chocolate chips to your banana bread is such a special treat. You get the extra little bit of chocolaty sweetness.
I also have a classic no chocolate chip banana bread recipe. That recipe makes two loaves but you can just half it and make one loaf.
And while the chocolate chips do add sweetness, I should point out this is not a super sweet banana bread in general.
Ingredients
- Butter: I always use salted butter in my recipes, I know that's controversial but I just do.
- Sugar: Cane sugar but white sugar would also work.
- Eggs: Two whole eggs, eggs act as a binder for the quick bread.
- Buttermilk: Buttermilk add moistness to the banana bread.
- Bananas: You'll need 4 ripe bananas and mash them up.
- Flour: Opt for all purpose flour.
- Salt: The recipe calls for kosher salt, if you want to use regular table salt you'll need to decrease the amount written in the recipe slightly.
- Baking Soda and Baking Powder: Act as leavening agents and give the quick bread rise.
- Cinnamon: My secret ingredient to give the banana bread a little extra something.
- Milk Chocolate and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: Using both is ideal for the best flavor!
How To Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Preheat the oven to 350.
Butter a loaf pan and line it with a small piece of parchment paper to help from sticking.
In a large bowl beat together the butter and sugar for 3 minutes until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs, one at a time. Mix in the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl beat the bananas to mash them. Mix this into the wet ingredients, along with the buttermilk.
In another separate bowl stir together the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir this into the wet ingredients just until combined. Mix in the chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the pan. Top with a few extra slices of bananas and sprinkle on extra chocolate chips.
Bake for 60 minutes (turn half way through). After 60 minutes, cover with foil and bake an additional 15 minutes. The banana bread will be done when a toothpick comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and cool.

- ¾ c cane sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 ripe bananas, plus extra slices for topping
- ½ c buttermilk, room temp
- 2 ½ c all purpose flour
- ¾ tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ c milk chocolate chips, plus more for topping
- ½ c semi sweet chocolate chips, plus more for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350.
- Butter a loaf pan. If your pan tends to stick then you may want to add a layer of parchment paper.
- In a large bowl mix together the melted butter, egg and sugar. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl beat the bananas to mash them. Mix this into the wet ingredients, along with the buttermilk. Stir everything together.
- To the bowl add the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir this into the wet ingredients just until combined. Mix in the chocolate chips.
- Pour the batter into the pan. Optionally, top with a few extra slices of bananas and sprinkle on extra chocolate chips.
- Bake for 75 minutes or once a toothpick comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and cool.
